Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s most ancient cities, was the first capital of the island and the center of Sinhalese civilization for over 1,300 years. Founded in the 4th century BCE by King Pandukabhaya, it became a thriving kingdom known for its advanced irrigation systems, religious heritage, and monumental architecture. The city remained the capital of Sri Lanka until the 11th century CE when repeated South Indian invasions forced the Sinhalese rulers to move to Polonnaruwa. Despite its decline as a political center, Anuradhapura remained an important pilgrimage site and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Buddhism and Religious Heritage Anuradhapura played a crucial role in spreading Theravāda Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It was here that Mahinda Thera, son of Emperor Ashoka of India, introduced Buddhism to King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE. This led to the construction of magnificent Buddhist structures, many of which still stand today. Sacred Buddhist Sites in Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi Tree – A sapling from the original Bodhi tree in India under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, planted in 288 BCE. Ruwanwelisaya Stupa – A massive white stupa built by King Dutugemunu (2nd century BCE), symbolizing Buddhist devotion. Jetavanaramaya Stupa – One of the tallest ancient stupas, built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE. Abhayagiri Monastery – A major center of Buddhist learning and a hub for monks from across Asia. Thuparamaya Stupa – The oldest stupa in Sri Lanka, enshrining the Buddha’s collarbone relic.
